How do Veneers Work?

Veneers are very thin but durable shells that are placed over your natural teeth. The goal of veneers is to conceal certain dental flaws, such as gaps between the teeth, crooked teeth, and discoloration. They can truly rejuvenate your smile and help you build back your confidence.

With porcelain veneers, your natural teeth will need to be filed down to an extent in order to make room in your mouth. The veneers are then cemented into place.

Are Veneers Permanent?

Despite being cemented to your natural teeth, porcelain veneers are not permanent, though they can last quite a long time if they’re cared for properly, thanks to their durability. Still, there will likely be a time when you will need to have the veneers replaced. Keep in mind that once your enamel has been filed down to accommodate the veneers, it will not grow back, so you will always need veneers to protect your teeth.

Are Veneers Uncomfortable? Will They Ruin My Teeth?

Your veneers should not cause you any discomfort. Porcelain veneers do require that your teeth be filed down so they can be fitted properly, but if you want veneers that are reversible and do not affect your natural teeth in any way, you might want to consider Lumineers. However, Lumineers are not as durable as porcelain veneers and therefore will not last as long, but they can always be replaced and you won’t have to worry about your natural teeth going unprotected since their enamel has been preserved.
